Fevers, Hospitals, and Cancer Oh My

Life has been crazy.  I try to remember, life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.  Oh boy is that true in my life!  Since my last post I have had another hospital stay.  This past Saturday I went into the hospital for fevers, again.  I spiked multiple fevers of 103+ degrees over Saturday and into Monday morning.  They started broad spectrum antibiotics and had everyone involved.  I saw my oncologist, my urologist, and a new infectious disease doctor.

I was concerned because I had a PET scan scheduled for Tuesday.  At that scan we were suppose to ensure the cancer hadn't spread and do the planning for my radiation.  They actually took me in an ambulance so I could get my PET scan completed.  It was quite entertaining considering my fevers were finished by then so I felt better and was just waiting to be released.

Upon return to the hospital I spent another night awaiting all the cultures to grow and give us results.  It was determined that I had yet another kidney infection, this one is going to take IV antibiotics to beat it.

Now, the big news.  I got my PET scan results.  They were NOT what we expected.  The cancer has spread.  So, put a hold on radiation again and it is time to develop a new plan.  There are effected lymph nodes in multiple spots, including:  my right top hip bone, two in my pelvis, one on my ovary, and one adjacent to the one we just removed surgically.

If you are interested in the technical terminology, the areas of concern are as follows:
  • The aortocaval lymph node ( the one we operated on), shows adjacent activity around the area
  • There is activity on the Right iliac wing cortex—which is near the Right top of the hip bone.
  • There are two small active lymph nodes by the right pelvis.
  • There are other areas of activity which are physiologic—meaning “normal” or to be expected for the area they are located in, ie, ovary.

So, this cancer is a bitch. It keeps coming back and really doesn't want to go away. I have to finish this round of IV antibiotics before we can begin a new treatment plan. Currently, it seems that the plan will include a combination of chemo. The doctor is working diligently to develop a new plan and find chemo I haven't had yet (I've already had four different types of chemo). I meet with the doctor again on August 31st so we can move forward with treatment.

Thank you to everyone who sends their positive thoughts. We are going to fight and win again!
